AGI Northern Ireland regional group was formed in 2001, and officially launched in 2002, to raise awareness of geographic information (GI) within Northern Ireland, and to encourage the sharing of knowledge and data between those with an interest in GI.
Since its formation, AGI Northern Ireland (AGI-NI) has established, and maintained, strong partnerships with a range of public and private sector organisations, locally, as well as further afield.
AGI-NI has also developed a program of Industry conference/exhibition events, seminars and site visits with the local GI community in mind. Such events have, and continue to assist in, providing continuing professional development (CPD), networking, and other (business related) opportunities. Furthermore, attendance at AGI-NI events can assist in achieving Chartered Geographer, CGeog (GIS), accreditation through the AGI CPD program.
AGI regional activities are directed by the AGI Northern Ireland Regional Committee. The Committee comprises of 14 active members, with representatives from both the public and private sectors. The group has been chaired by Dr Conor G. Smyth, Translink, since 2004.
At a policy level, AGI-NI has representation on the Northern Ireland GI Strategy Delivery Board, other Stakeholder Groups (e.g. LPS Pointer Stakeholder Forum) as well as representation at National level on AGI Council, London.
Clearly, AGI NI provides a local focus - as well as forum, for AGI members in Northern Ireland, enabling the formation of partnerships and improved networking partnerships - amongst other benefits. Its success, however, is highly dependent upon volunteer members, and the involvement of those with an interest in local GI issues.
