System and service suppliers represent approximately 1/3rd of the total number of corporate members of the AGI. Also just under half of all sponsor members would fall under this description. Whilst the views and interests of the suppliers often accord with the wider AGI membership, they do have specific needs and areas of interest which are not easily catered for by any specific group within the AGI.
The agenda of SIG activities are agreed by the members themselves, working with other AGI bodies. Work has already been undertaken in support of the development of the UK GI Strategy and making representations to the Government GI Systems and Services framework procurement.
The SIG has reviewed the future role, responsibility and expectations of the current membership and those potentially interested in joining. A number of key objectives have been identified:
Networking
Increase members' 'knowledge' of customer/market challenges and opportunities via the sharing of ideas, issues and information. Whilst members are often in competition with each other, the last 18 months have proved that the SIG offers a forum where ideas can be shared and group knowledge increased.
Developing
Provide a forum allowing members to 'network' with peers. Formal and informal discussions throughout the year have proved valuable to the members participating.
Provide a forum helping members to 'discuss' topics of common interest. Ranging from leading edge issues such as neo-geography to the future role of companies such as Google® and Microsoft®, these discussions open a route for opinion sharing and a review of individuals own perceptions.
Encourage 'innovation' amongst members by opening routes for ideas sharing.
Influencing
Support members to 'influence/lobby' AGI on matters that concern/affect the system and service supplier community. Initially focused on procurement routes and the launch of government policy, such as the location strategy and INSPIRE, it is highly likely that the future holds additional such issues. A single voice within the AGI focused on suppliers' opinions has proved stronger than individuals alone.
Validating
Help members to 'validate' ideas and concerns with peers. Not originally an expected outcome of the group, often members are single voices within an organisation. The ability to validate opinions and ideas regarding a number of topics has proved as valuable as listening to conflicting arguments.
The group operates under the rules and procedures established for other Special Interest Groups within the AGI.
