Location, location, location!
Land & property are fixed in space - their location determines their value, their accessibility, their utility, their ownership, their planning status, their vulnerabilities. Surveyors, valuers, planners, engineers, registrars, local authorities, insurers, estate agents, developers and many others need to know where particular parcels of land and property are located - just to do their own jobs. Location is the essence of Geographic Information (GI).
The AGI Property SIG brings the knowledge and techniques of the GI industry to property professionals and, in turn, brings the property expertise back to the GI practitioners.
We cannot live without each other; together we can be more efficient and serve our clients and society better.
A very high percentage of government and business databases have locational elements - many related to property - addresses, topographic maps, registry maps, geological maps, mailing lists, insurance claims, mortgage valuations. Government and industry is only beginning to wake up to the 'Power of Geography' - the property industry needs geographic information to manage itself and to present itself to the rest of the world.
The mission statement for the group was discussed at the Feb 28th 2008 meeting at the Land registry offices in Holborn, London. It is proposed as:
"Promoting the benefits of Land & Property Information through knowledge sharing and collaborative working"
